Birth of Memories (BoM) is a study that seeks to understand autobiographical memories in infants

  • Do infants remember autobiographical events from days, weeks, or months ago?
  • What brain mechanisms in infancy underlie memory retrieval?
  • When does adult-like memory function develop?

We are interested in infants' ability to form and remember autobiographical events. We investigate this question using brain imaging technology called fMRI and videos from infants' lives.

With fMRI, we can measure how an infant’s brain responds to a video recording of an event from their own life. While infants are not capable of telling us what they can and can not remember, brain responses measured using fMRI can help us unlock infants’ memories

Be a part of the Birth of Memories study

Passion for science.

You and your child will interact with scientists at Yale and be a part of a research team. You will make genuine contributions to science and help advance the research on autobiographical memories in early childhood.

Learning opportunities.

Participating families will get firsthand experience of human neuroimaging research, and learn about how researchers study the brain and the mind.

Certified baby scientists.

Your child will be a “Yale Baby Scientist” and will receive certificates and prizes. Families will receive monetary compensation for their time at each fMRI scan.
